Hello,
I seem to be having a tough time with the chapter 9 of the Smart Home book. I like the idea of being able to access the system from anywhere. However, when I go to “freenom” to obtain a domain name, I get a message that seems to be saying that they are currently inoperative. When I go “GoDaddy” , I get confused by all the various plans, etc. I don’t plan to use this for any type of business venture. Can you offer any other suggestions?
Kentm
Hello!
Thank you for letting me know, it does look like freenom has temporarily paused new registrations. I don’t know of any other free alternative right now…
You only need to buy a domain name, do NOT buy any othe upgrades during checkout, you just need a domain name that it usually costs $9 to $20 per year.
I recommend using either Namecheap or Godaddy for paid domains:
- https://www.godaddy.com/domains (godaddy has many upsells, so you can ignore all the upsells and just pay the $20 /per year domain name)
I tried something else. I have a hostname with NOIP.com. I tried to access my server using my smartphone and that name and the :1880/ui address. It worked partially. The gauges and switches worked fine but the image did not make it. There so many variables here that I am afraid to guess what it might be.

Hi.
What image are you referring to? In which section of the eBook?
Regards,
Sara
Sorry. I am using the Smart Home with RPi, ESPs . I am referring to the image from the esp32 Cam project. Using my smartphone, I get a good image when logged in locally but when I use the No-ip address I do not get the image but I get the title for it and the gauges, charts and switches. I can operate the switches from my phone as well.

Please note that you need to create a tunnel to the camera first before you can access it from anywhere in Node-RED.
See page 444. Did you follow those instructions?
Sara, the Cloudflare is the part that I was not using. I simply tried to access the server by using my hostname.no-ip.org account and opening the port 1880 in my router. Everything worked fine except for the video stream. Now that I have read it all over again, I will give it another try.
Regards
Charles
You have to follow those steps, otherwise, the video streaming won’t be available outside the network.

Sara
Sara, After spending many hours trying to work through this lesson, I am setting it aside. It is most likely something I will never use again. After getting a domain name from NAMECHEAP, I set about trying to get the CLOUDFLARE setup. In that effort I was asked to locate the “registrar” using WHOIS. But WHOIS failed telling me the TLD Not Supported. Apparently I didn’t see the pre-requirements for this course because I soon decided that it was all way over my head. I never did figure out if I was changing nameservers in CloudFlare or NameCheap. I am just happy that I got the system working in-house.

Charles
Hello Charles, did you end up buying the domain name on namecheap? If so I can try to help you set up the DNS to cloudflare
Rui, yes I bought the domain on NameCheap. The name I bought is “ckentm.ME” and getting that setup with CloudFlare is precisely where I got stuck. Any help would greatly appreciated.
Charles
Hello again!
Can you email me here your namecheap login details and Cloudflare login details?
It’s easier if I login into your account and set up everything for you in this case. Set some throwaway passwords and you change them immediately after I setup your account
