My first project with a Raspberry Pi and in the process of setting up a Home Automation System found out the ip address changed when I tried to connect via SSH.  I seems that the IP address can change over time.  Should I change to a static address and what are the risks.

Hi.
If it is constantly changing, it is better to set a static IP address.
Since your Raspberry Pi is a local web server, I don’t think there are any risks with the static IP address.
