Now alI get is errors when I try to upload a sketch to the ESP-8266

I tried several different sketches and they all have the same errors.

That error means that your ESP8266 is not establishing a serial communication wtih your computer, so it can’t upload any code…

warning: espcomm_sync failed
error: espcomm_open failed
  • Did you select the right COM port in the Tools menu?
  • Which ESP8266 board are you using?

The board is a ESP-8266 12E Kit NodeMCU
I would select Com 11 which shows up in board manager as Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge(Com11).
I changed the board from Generic ESP8266 Module to Node MCU 1.0 (ESP-12 Module)
And changed the cable. Now the sketch will run.
But all I get on the Serial Monitor is Several Squares a character and several more squares
This is what shows up under tools
Upload Speed:  115200
CPU Frequency: 80 MHz
Flash Size “4M (no SPIFFS)”
Debug Port “Disabled”
Debug Level “None”
IWIP Variant “v2 Lower Memory”
VTables “Flash”
Exception “Disabled”
Erase Flash “Only Sketch”
Port “Com11”

I think your problem was already solved in the other thread. Your Arduino IDE Serial Monitor had the wrong baud rate (you had to change it to 115200). Thanks for your patience throughout this process!
