Which pins do I apply power to on esp8266

I have installed the web server as per instructions and it works well, but only if plugged in to the computer USB port.  When I connect a 3.3V battery to a pin (16) the blue light flashes once but I cannot connect to the server. Plug usb cable in and the blue light stays on and the web server works.

Do I need to connect any other pins (Ground is connected of course) such as EN.  Nothing else seems to be connected on the diagram given in the lesson.

Hi John.
Can you tell me which specific project are you following?
What connections are making to power the ESP8266, and why are you powering 3.3V to pin 16?
Regards,
Sara

I am following the home automation web server course.
I think the problem was a flat battery. I will get a new one and see if that cures it.
Thanks
John
